Quotidian scenes are spaces occupied by people in the course of their daily lives (personal and professional). Such scenes are often "boundless" (extend "as far as the eye can see") and often contain overlapping, non-Lambertian (shiny, transparent and semi-transparent) objects immersed in generalized light fields. Currently available 3D imagers, while amazing in many respects, are essentially unable to reconstruct quotidian scenes. Put another way, there is a severe price/performance bottleneck preventing the benefits of 3D Imaging from being realized by most people. Quidient scientists and engineers are using Locale Engines to reconstruct specialized quotidian scenes. The goal is to be able to three-dimensionally reconstruct all quotidian scenes to the resolution and accuracy of conventional cameras.
Visual inspection tasks can be effectively automated by combining Quidient's scene reconstruction engines (SREs) with classifiers that mimic human cognition (e.g., CNNs: Convolutional Neural Networks). Pipeline inspection, cell tower inspection and vehicle hail-damage assessment are such cognitive inspection tasks. An automobile can be thought of as a "deformed" mirror, reflecting light from a generalized light field in which it is immersed. Since Intrinsic Imaging is light field based, it is particularly well-suited to measuring surface anomalies, such as dents, on highly-reflective objects, such as automobiles. Reconstructed automotive surfaces can be digitally inspected using a classifier such as a CNN to detect and characterize dents.
